Retaining walls

Retaining walls need to be safe

Retaining walls are all around us, and yet we probably never give a second thought to them. They are in use on motorways, on building sites and inside of buildings that are used for commercial business. They are built of various materials but will all need to conform to Health and Safety standards, and will need to be able to pass certain stress tests.

Motorway

Retaining walls are frequently seen on motorways and A roads in order to protect workmen, and also to form a path to slip roads or diversions. These can be built of strong plastic or may be made of stressed concrete. They will be lined up on the motorway to effectively provide a wall that is there to ensure that in the event of a vehicle crash, the people working on the roads are as safe as possible. Vehicles travel at great speeds and the impact can be considerable so the concrete must be of a certain type to withstand the impact.

To divert cars from a motorway, or an A road, red and white plastic blocks are placed in a line to make a diversion path. These will be strong and durable and will be able to slow a car down on impact.

Building sites

By law, building sites need to be shielded from the passer by, and the wall that creates the perimeter of the site will often be made of concrete interlocking panels. These will ensure that the public have protection from the activities, will keep down some of the dust movement, and will also act as a preventative that will stop people entering the site for the wring reason. They are security barriers.

Internal walls

In large commercial buildings it is often necessary to compartmentalise the building so that stock can be kept in designated areas or so that the offices are separate to the work area. If the latter is the case the wall will probably need to be sound proofed. It may also be that you wish to use the yard for storage purposes and retaining walls will be established to give stability to the area that has been marked out.
