Boiled Frog Syndrome – Are You Suffering From It?

The problem with death is that it has a habit of sneaking up on us. We don’t get any warning of impending danger (or at least nothing we notice) like a back up signal from the garbage truck or a fully functioning smoke alarm (one that isn’t set off by the toaster). It just shows up, unannounced and unappreciated.

But really, is it sneaking up on us? Or are we simply ignorant of what’s going on inside us that is causing premature death? If only our body came with low oil lights and check engine indicators, then maybe it would become fool proof enough that even the dimmest of people would know to take action. I actually have been in a person’s car where their engine oil light was on and they literally covered it with a Band-Aid. This is a shining example of how most people approach their health.

So as we move through life, ignoring our check transmission signals, we etch another letter into our tomb. It happens slowly, but surely, until a point where our symptoms become undeniable and we check in to the hospital and realize we are afflicted with boiling frog syndrome.

Are You Becoming a Boiled Frog?

What is boiling frog syndrome? The premise is that if a frog is placed in boiling water, it will jump out, but if it’s placed in cold water that is slowly heated, it will not perceive the danger and will be cooked to death. It’s a remarkable analogy of what 90% of people are doing to themselves today.

Some signs you are a boiled frog include:
“That one cigarette won’t hurt me, even if I smoke it 1000 times in a year.”
“Those 6 beers won’t affect me, even if I have them 3 times a week.”
“That bucket of greased chicken, hydrogenated fries, and chemically laced diet soda isn’t going to kill me.”
“I don’t drink much coffee, just a couple cups a day.”
The problem is many small choices today have big consequences tomorrow. Before you know it, your 50 lbs overweight, suffering from some type of illness, on several different prescriptions (the Band-Aid approach), and eventually counting your regrets on your deathbed. Do you really want it to go down like that? Do you want to be a boiled frog?

Well, do you?
