Yeast Infections – Ditch the Beer

Most people don’t give yeast much thought unless you own a bakery or a brewpub. However, it has become an essential component to quickly produce breads, beer, and wine, which are some of our most beloved foods. Only problem is, for many people these foods bring lethargy, pain and confusion as well.

Yeast 101

Baker’s yeast is the common name for the strains of yeast commonly used as a leavening agent in baking bread and bakery products, where it converts the fermentable sugars present in the dough into carbon dioxide and ethanol. Baker’s yeast is almost always of the species Saccharomyces cerevisiae which is the same species commonly used in alcoholic fermentation, and so is also called brewer’s yeast.

What’s the Problem With Bread and Beer?

There’s nothing inherently dangerous about bread and beer. However, wheat, yeast, and sugar (common ingredients in both) are common issues for a lot of people, whether they make the correlation or not. I’m not referring to too many carbs, or too many wobbly pops, but the combination of the common ingredients that can create an out of balance digestive system, which is a health, hazard waiting to blow up.

Enter Sandman – Candida

A yeast-like fungus, Candida albicans usually lives in the intestines along with many other microorganisms known as intestinal flora. If these microorganisms are not carefully balanced, Candida can multiply unchecked, causing infection. The taking of antibiotics and steroids, along with a diet high in yeast-containing foods, alcohol and refined carbohydrates, can adversely affect the delicate balance of intestinal flora.

Are We Candida Enablers?

Lets go through the checklist.

1) Antibiotics – check. There nary a person on the planet who has not been exposed to antibiotics, mostly prescribed by doctors, and the rest ingesting through milk and animal protein. 2) Steroids – check. Many people have been exposed to steroidal drugs. 4) Alcohol – check. A popular pastime by nearly everyone, illustrated by the growth of brew pubs, licensed restaurants, and the home brewing craze. 5) Ingestion of refined carbohydrates – big fact check with gold star. When you consider flour and sugar are two of the most consumed foods on the planet, and you can’t go to a mainstream restaurant without sandwiches, pastas, and pizza’s taking up 80% of the menu, its pretty obvious we are gluttons of the grains.

Its estimated over 30% of people have a serious candida infection. Some suggest that 80% or more people suffer from it in some fashion.

What Are the Symptoms?

If you experience fatigue, headaches, poor digestion, confusion, flatulence, aches, and general malaise, you could be suffering from a candida infection.

You can’t throw a rock without hitting someone with at least 2 or 3 of these symptoms.

How Do I Combat or Reverse It?

A candida infection requires you to refrain from refined carbohydrates and grains, starch, sugars, alcohol, yeast, and other fermented foods. A diet rich in greens, tart fruit, and anti-fungal foods such as garlic is extremely important.

How Do I Know?

There is a simple test that can give you insight into your current situation. It’s called the “spit test”.

First thing in the morning, before you put ANYTHING in your mouth, fill a clear glass with room temperature bottled water.

Work up a bit of saliva, and then spit it into the glass of water. Check the water every 15 minutes or so for up to one hour.

If you have a potential problem, you will see strings (like legs) traveling down into the water from the saliva floating on the top, or “cloudy” saliva will sink to the bottom of the glass, or cloudy specks will seem to be suspended in the water.

If there are no strings and the saliva is still floating after at least one hour, you probably have Candida under control, and have nothing to worry about.

Take it Seriously

Candida is an insidious condition. Schedule your spit test and do an original diagnosis. It could be the easiest and most important test of your life. Candida can cause a lot of different symptoms and millions of people are placed on thousands of different prescriptions to treat the same problem. None of these drugs can cure the problem.

Candida can be taken out, but it takes some work if you have had it for any length of time. Be diligent and the rewards will far outweigh the temporary inconveniences.

I would know. I’m a yeast survivor. 🙂
