As a young man I worked as a roadie for some of the rock bands of the time. I roadied for bands such as Poison, Metallica, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, to name but a few. Between 1988 and 1996 I think I worked for at 40 different bands over the years and I built up quite a collection of promotional lanyards which displayed the bands name or sometimes the venue as well. I wore it with a silly sense of pride as it meant I was part of the inner circle. For those of you who don’t know what promotional lanyards are, they are those cords that people wear around their necks usually with a security badge or something hanging from the end. Of all my promotional lanyards I think my most treasured was from the Meatloaf tour of 1992 when they played the Monsters of Rock festival in Donnington.
Now of course my rock ‘n’ roll days are behind me and I’m a computer programmer and the only trace of my rock days is my pony tail. I do however still have one around my neck as the company I work at requires us to wear promotional lanyards so I use it to carry my identification as well as to carry my ever trusted USB stick on. It is unlikely, however, that I’ll ever add this to my treasured promotional lanyards collection, my company name doesn’t quite have the same ring as Status Quo or Iron Maiden.
